He went on to star at the University of Texas and was key to the Longhorns winning the Southwest Conference title in 1962 and 1963. Signed by the Chicago Cubs, Chuck led the Texas League in ERA (2.19) pitching for the Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs in 1965. Hartenstein appeared in one game for the Cubs late in the 1965 season, but as a pinch runner and not as a pitcher. He did not make his pitching debut until the 1966 season.
